No bones are broken.
I was lucky. I made a serious mistake. I was just about to pull out to go to my bone scan appointment. At the last minute, I decided to make a quick run back into my house to grab a light jacket. It was so last minute that I had already committed to backing out. My car was in gear.
The safety features worked. My car tells me when I leave it running with the keys in it. But this time it was telling me DO NOT GET OUT NOW, YOU IDIOT. I didn't interpret the warning signal correctly so I started to step out. When I saw the car start to move, I was too late and the door hit my leg and knocked me down to the ground. As I was wondering how far the car was going to roll, I got my answer.
It went as far my left foot, drove on to it, and stopped.. So my foot was pinned under a couple thousand pounds of car. My phone was in the car.
All I could do was yell for help. Fortunately my neighbors were at home. Bill called 911 while Kathleen drove the car off my foot. It was only crushing my foot for a very long five minutes.
X-rays were done and I got to come home. Badly bruised it is for sure. No cast, no crutches, no wheelchair. Again I was lucky.
So today my message is about gratitude. Be grateful you haven't done this. Be mindful. Don't ever step out of a car without making sure the parking brake is set. Make sure it is not in gear. If someone else is driving, they can set the brake before you get out, so their foot doesn't slip.
Also, know your neighbors and help each other out. You may save a life. They may save yours.
When bad things happen, and bad things do happen to everyone, sometimes the positive lens needs to be focused on gratitude. So today I'm grateful for good neighbors and no broken bones.
