Lately I've been having food adventures, taking little road trips to visit cheese makers, farm stands, and lavender fields. I found a lovely map for local farms at Mama's Gardens farm stand. Reading through it, I'm inspired to visit more. I also see that some farms invite guests for a farm stay.
I think It's vital to support local farmers and growers. Keeping food sources local strengthens our community as a whole. It makes our economy stronger because all the the money stays at home., rather than going to producers abroad There are no issues with a supply chain. And it's healthier too. This is the freshest food possible. Fresh vegetables taste better and last longer.
When you meet the people who produce your food, they can tell you about their benefits as well as answer any questions you might have. I've also found them to be a great source for new recipes.
Here in Bellingham, we have the biggest berry farms in the country. U-pick berries, flowers, and vegetables are part of the summer fun here. In October, it is especially fun to visit pumpkin patches and corn mazes.
And sea food! I've bought rockfish, cod, salmon, and spot prawns right off the boats docked at our marina in Bellingham Bay. It's also a short drive to find oyster purveyors and farms in Chuckanut Bay and Blaine. There are mussels farms in nearby Coupeville.
Buy Local - It puts the smiles on your neighbors' faces and your own.
