Balance and Boundaries

Staying in Your Safe Zone
Staying in Your Safe Zone

When I start to feel overwhelmed by demands on my time from several different directions, I can feel my chest constrict and my brain go fuzzy. That's when I know I need some ME time, to fill up my reserves again.

I've been making this point for years, but sometimes I need to remind myself to take my own advice. I'm the only one who knows how much I can tolerate, how much energy I have to give, and how much time I have.

So I need to say NO when it is beyond what I am comfortable doing. It is always okay to say NO when our limited time feels like it is being encroached upon. We can set our own boundaries. We can control the demands on our energy. We can decide what and when and where we want to give our time. We can set our own priorities. Sometimes it is necessary to take a break from all the family and social demands and do what we need to do to fill our tanks.

So today, I am taking a break from everyone else and writing my press release for my new exhibit at El Agave Restaurant and I am finishing this blog post. I read the last chapter in a book and had apple and cheese slices. I made some alcohol ink postcards, taking advantage of a sunny day on my back deck. I am doing MY laundry and emptied MY dishwasher. I sorted out my closet and pulled my suitcase out, ready to pack for a much needed vacation in the sun. I left to play two hours of ping pong with MY ping pong friends.

It is all about balance. We all need exercise and sunshine. We need rest. Self care is important. When we feel stressed out, it's time to check in with ourselves and do whatever would tick off some needs of our own.

Tomorrow is another day and I'll be ready for it.
